U10As put the power on to win at Saracens' Tournament

11th November 2007

The Maidenhead RFC U10 A squad demonstrated their power, strength and tactical abilities as they won the U10 tournament at the Saracens Mini Rugby Festival last Sunday. Victory was well deserved as the squad only conceded 1 try in the whole event, continuing their winning form this season. Drawn against Amersham & Chiltern, Saracen Fez Heads, Kingsbridge and Harrow in their pool, Maids U10s won their pool convincingly, going onto meet northern-based Sandal, winners of the other pool, in the final.

Maids' first match was against Amersham & Chiltern, who started the match strongly. Maids’ Kieran Evans and Scott Prince worked well together to move the ball forward and there was some great tackling by Joel Greene and Shane McKenna keeping the Maids defence strong. Ben Lawrence continued to drive the ball forward and Daniel Cutler demonstrated some great try saving towards the end of the first half. Maids scrum worked well and Abigail Dow showed tremendous commitment to tackles and Reggie Pay ran well out on the wing. The match was closely fought ending 0-0.

With determination to win, Maids went into their second match against hosts, Saracens Fez Heads with vigour. An outstanding win for Maids 25-0, resulting from domination at the start. A great run by Scott Prince for Maids first try, followed by a second from Reggie Pay, set up by Abigail Dow in the first half. In the second half, Maidenhead defended well leading to a second try from Scott Prince. Fantastic individual try from Joel Greene, running the full length of the pitch. Maids continued their strong defence, led by Will Lawrence and Ben Lawrence and Scott Prince scored his third try for Maids just before the end of the match.

The third match for Maids was against Kingsbridge and, again, Maids demonstrated sheer power and determination. After a strong start and great scrums, Scott Prince scored an early first try. The squad continued to work together; passing well and allowing Daniel Cutler to score Maids second try. A second try from Scott Prince followed almost immediately and Abigail Dow followed this with another try just before the end of the first half. In the second half, Abigail Dow displayed a solo run to score her second try and with great tackling and defending by the whole squad, two further tries were scored by Daniel Cutler and a great long run by Julian Guy to score. The final score was 35-0 to Maids.

Their fourth and final pool match was against a known, strong squad from Harrow. This was tougher for Maids but they fought against an aggressive start from Harrow allowing Scott Prince to score the only try of the match. Maids defended strongly on the try line, especially from Shane McKenna and Ben Lawrence. Kieran Evans and Daniel Cutler performed some great passing and Reggie Pay created some good chances by storming up the wing. Harrow pushed hard but was no match for Maids who won the game 5-0.

Having not lost a game in their pool, Maids were clear pool winners for the final against Sandal. A strong start from Sandal for them to score their try, but Joel Greene ran hard and gained good ground, and allowing Ben Lawrence to also push hard toward the try line, but Sandal defended well. At half time, Sandal was ahead but the match was evenly balanced. In the second half the match was very physical but lineouts and set plays were working well for Maids. Julian Guy made excellent runs throughout the second half, resulting in a magnificent run to score Maids try. The final finished 5-5. However, Maids won the tournament on point’s difference from their outstanding try score in the pool.
