U9s entertain Basingstoke & Camberley

Sunday 25th February 2007

Maidenhead Rugby Club's U9 squads once again performed brilliantly during their triangular fixture with Basingstoke and Camberley on Sunday with some great overall performances by both Maids A and B team players.

Maids A squad (the Eagles), performed well, winning all 3 of their matches. The Eagles first game was against a strong A-squad from Camberley with both squads tackling, rucking and driving hard to win the ball and score tries. At half-time it was 0-0 and it looked liked the match would end that way. However, seconds after the whistle blew to start the second half, the Eagles ripped the ball and Scott Prince made an excellent run to score the only try of the match, with a final result of 5-0. In their second match, the Eagles met Camberley's B squad which resulted in a convincing win for the Eagles, 30-0. With tries scored by Joel Greene, Abigail Dow, Liam Cook and 2 each for Scott Prince and Shane McKenna, the Camberley B squad didn't make it all plain sailing for the Eagles, fighting hard to win the ball and defend. Spurred on by a great result, the Eagles final game was against Basingstoke's A squad. The Eagles were performing well as a squad tackling well, ripping the ball, rucking and passing, with the first try scored by Liam Cook. In the second half, Julian Guy and Daniel Cutler made some great runs for the Eagles, with Daniel making a great pass to Scott Prince for the second and winning try. Result was 10-0 to the Eagles.

For Maids B squad (the Hawks), games were a little tougher but, again, some great performances. In their first match, the Hawks met Camberley's B squad which was a well fought out match with great tackling, driving and defending by both squads. The result was a draw, 10-10 with Hawks tries scored by Will Hogan and James Millwater. The Hawks then faced Basingstoke's A squad, which proved to be a much tougher game and despite a lot of great tackling, particularly from the Hawks' Will Hogan, Basingstoke proved the stronger side and won the match 25-0. Finally, the Hawks played Camberley's A squad and despite a number of great runs by Hawks, especially Reggie Pay, and overall defending, Camberley proved too strong with a win of 30-0.
