Maidenhead U9 Eagles (A's) and Falcons (B's) had a great time at the annual Newbury Mini Rugby festival on Sunday, with the Eagles being unbeaten and just missing out the chance of playing for the cup but winning the shield final instead, and the Falcons winning the Medal final. In the U9 A's, the Eagles were drawn in a tough pool, meeting Huddersfield, Devonport, Windsor and Newbury. Huddersfield were first to be taken by the Eagles, 15-5, with strong play and determination from all the squad and tries scored by Abigail Dow and a brace from Scott Prince. Next, the Eagles met Devonport and again demonstrated great strength, attacking and defensive play, handing the Eagles their second win, 10-5, with tries scored by Chris Cousins with a sprint the length of the pitch after a superb pass from Will Lawrence, and the second try scored by Ben Lawrence. The Eagles third match was against the eventual competition winners, Windsor. This was an extremely close game with both teams tackling, attacking and defending convincingly, which was reflected in the eventual score of 10-10 with the Eagles tries from Ben Lawrence and Daniel Cutler. In their last pool match, the Eagles met their hosts, Newbury, in what was again a very closely fought match, with the score ending 5-5 and the Eagles try scored by Ben Lawrence. This put the Eagles runners up in their Pool and into the Shield final against Devizes. Both teams played extremely well, with great tackling, rucks, drives and defence, but the Eagles proved stronger on the day, with a win of 10-5 with tries scored by Scott Prince and Will Lawrence scoring the winning try with a dive on the last play of the match. squad: In the U9 B's Competition, the Falcons worked hard and won the Medal final. In their first match against Alton, the Falcons fought strongly against a taller and stronger side. Despite dominating possession, the Falcons couldn't break through to score and went down 25-0. In their second match against Windsor the Falcons put up a valiant attempt against a strong team. A fantastic fun by Reggie Pay resulted in the Falcons only try, but the Falcons lost the match 25-5. In their third match against Cobham, the Falcons had some good breakthroughs by Will Doolan, but the Falcons once again failed to convert these to tries. Good support and team playing, but the Falcons also lost this match 20-0. In their final pool match against Jersey, the Falcons started out strongly with an immediate try by Tom Kynaston, closely followed by another by Will Doolan. Unfortunately after leading most of the match the Falcons were beaten 20-10 by a couple of lucky breaks for Jersey in the final minutes. This put the Falcons in the Medal final against the hosts, Newbury. This was a fantastic final match by the Falcons, with Daniel Henshaw scoring a hat-trick. The team showed what they are really capable of when their good teamwork and passing was complimented by convincing tackling. Additional tries were scored by Adam Williams and Tom Kynaston, resulting in a win of 25-5. Falcons
