U17s great win over rivals Marlow

Maidenhead U17s 8 v Marlow U17s 6
Sunday 10th December 2006

Head Coach David Pepper and the rest of the coaching team at Maidenhead U17 gave their squad a hearty well done to one and all, but said 'what is it about Marlow'?

Once again it was a game of frustration, near misses, poor decisions, mistakes and injustice. Maidenhead were held up over the line 5 times, with independent confirmation that at least 2 of them were clear tries. Also, winger Ollie Soundy had a clear try disallowed, (which would have been his second of the day), when he was adjudged to have gone into touch! But with all of that said Maidenhead got exactly what they deserved.

A great win over a fierce local rival........

Coming to the fixture on the back of a 3:3 draw in the first phase of the OBB season Marlow, having not beaten Maidenhead for several years were absolutely desperate to get a win before moving onto Colts rugby. Unfortunately, that did not happen today despite all of the above. And even when Guy Swaddling, an ex Maidenhead player slotted over Marlow's second penalty to make it 5 -6 all did not appear lost.

The pack led by Guy Sears doggedly ensured Maidenhead kept Marlow on the back foot with some excellent pick and drive work from Danish Tariq and Toby Harrison, with all the forwards ensuring ball retention particularly in the set pieces. This constant pace and support play from centres Ross Cuplen and George Colbourn ensured the pressure eventually paid off with a penalty kick offering Fly Half for the day, Ross Pepper the opportunity to demonstrate his character and hold his nerve to convert in the final moments of the game dealing a real blow to Marlow who mentally thought the game won.

Maidenhead U17 have now won 7 matches on the trot in the OBB season to date, conceding only 1 try, an impressive record and a testament to the skill and commitment of a well drilled squad.
