The Under 14s kicked off the new season in style with an emphatic victory in a friendly match against local rivals Drifters. Played in glorious sunshine, this one-sided affair saw the boys run in 13 tries and convert 11 of them. Most impressive was the teamwork and support play. Flowing moves with quick hands and a relentless pace right through to the final whistle showed the positive effect of the coaches’ pre-season skills and fitness training regime. Everyone in Maids 28-man squad played a part as the coaches rotated players during the game. But the cohesion and commitment was strong whatever the line-up. Top scorer Thomas Simpson showed ominous early season form and was unstoppable out wide, scoring six tries and five conversions. Captain Ben Pritchard, despite taking an early knock to the head, carved open Drifters for three tries and two conversions. The other tries were scored by Paul Sayers, Michael Habgood, Charlie Wickham-Smith and Mitch Burn, with further conversions from Paul and Mitch. Many of the tries were scored following good work in the rucks and mauls, where Maids dominated possession. Connor Murphy and George Kirk, Paul Sweeney and David Walker all weighed in with useful contributions. Chris Withers, Morgan Davies and Matt Morgan were tenacious, Michael James used his power to drive the pack forward and James Parrott made some excellent runs. TJ Hudson and Elliott Reid were often in the thick of things. The boys were highly effective on the attack, drawing in the opposition before making their passes to expose gaps that they then exploited ruthlessly. The team will face much sterner opposition during the season but this was an excellent morale-boasting start and should give boys confidence, especially for the Maidenhead Tournament in October.
