U14s edge Redingensians

Maidenhead U14s 22 v Redingensians U14s 17
Sunday 22nd April 2007

A win is a win but one wondered whether this one was won or lost until the final move of the match. That's when Olly Evans charged over the line to secure a last-gasp victory against Redingensians, who had played the better rugby and dominated most of the game. It may not have been pretty, but Maids dug deep and kept their composure against their better-organised opponents. C'est la vie, as the disappointed visitors were probably not saying.

Redingensians showed their intent from the start, breaking quickly and tackling aggressively. It was no surprise when they took a 5.0 lead with a well-worked attack. Despite not supplying enough ball to the Backs, Maids stubbornly held out and with their first cohesive move finally found Thomas Simpson, who flew from the halfway line to score. James Brooks' conversion put the home side ahead.

The visitors struck back straight away with a converted try of their own, but Maids clung on when James landed a penalty to leave the home side trailing just 10.12 at the turnaround.

Possibly reinvigorated by the ample half-time supply of oranges and bananas, the boys started to play as they knew they could. Better passing and more solid tackling pegged back Redingensians. Another try from Thomas and conversion from a tight angle by James put Maids ahead but Redingensians once again hit back almost immediately to level the scores at 17.17.

Tension mounted as both sides battled with everything they could throw at each other to break the deadlock. Play flowed from end to end with strong running and solid defending. Neither side gave an inch in the frantic finale. As the clock ticked down it was clear whoever scored next would win.

Maids surged forward, holding their own in the scrums and not allowing the visitors to drive them back. Hard-won possession was retained with better decision-making and passing. In the final minutes Maids won a penalty and with a quick tap and go set the Backs off wide on the right. This time there was no hesitancy or slack passing. Olly collected the pass, charged through several tackles and landed the match-winning try.

This was a great way to end the league season. With only one defeat - to champions Newbury (again) - it seems likely that Maids will secure the runners-up spot for the second season.
