U14s rocket Ruislip

Ruislip U14s 0 v Maidenhead U14s 79
Sunday 5th November 2006

There were fireworks aplenty on the field as the Under 14s shrugged off a disappointing loss in the previous friendly against Staines with a sizzling, one-sided win away to Ruislip.

Ruislip worked hard but for little reward. Their forwards tackled well but weaknesses in the Backs allowed Maids to run riot over the 60 minutes, scoring 13 tires and converting seven.

The first 10 minutes were fairly evenly matched as each side probed for gaps. An early interception by James Parrott was passed to Michael Habgood who won a line out. Tristan Cadden darted through but Ruislip’s line held firm. Maids’ pressure on the home side’s 10 metre line inevitably paid dividends with two quick tries. From their scrum Ruislip kicked upfield, but only into the waiting hands of Ben Pritchard, who stormed forward to open the scoring. Good work in the line-out by Alex Jones, Michael James, Connor Murphy and Elliott Reid, secured possession and the ball was worked wide to Thomas Simpson, who doubled the lead.

The boys were playing well as a team with far more cohesion than in previous matches, and a better understanding of what they each needed to do. They were winning the mauls and rucks and offloading well. The pitch was beginning to open up, as Jasper van der Walk, George Kirk and TJ Hudson put together an excellent move down the wing. From the resulting scrum, Michael Habgood found space and a trademark darting run secured more points. Good distribution by Matt Morgan allowed Paul Sayers to add another try to give Maids a 33.0 half-time advantage.

Ruislip were winning some possession but were unable to make much of it as Maids pushed up well as a line and gave the hosts no time to think. By drawing in the hosts’ Forwards, the boys exposed the weak Backs line to a constant battering. Jack Blumenthal and Michael James fought well in the mauls to keep on the pressure. A good offload from Paul Sayers helped set Thomas Simpson on his way for another try and Jasper added one more after Ben’s effort from winning a scrum. David Walker scrapped well on the wing. Charlie Wickham-Smith ripped well in the mail and quick hands put Ben in space to further the score.

Maids were playing excellent rugby now, with flowing moves unhindered by opposition tackles. The boys were focused on their task, recycling the ball well and playing as a team. By making simple moves effectively, they were in total control. James Parrott kept the scoreline ticking over, followed by further tries from Paul and Jasper. A great tackle by George Kirk halted one of Ruislip’s rare attacks down the flanks. The match was finished with yet another well worked try, with quick hands spreading play wide and Chris Withers applying the finishing touch with style. This was a morale-boosting win that put the confidence back into many of the players. The trick now is to hold this form against stronger opposition.
