U14s sweep past Reading

Maidenhead U14s 65 v Reading U14s 0
Sunday 4th February 2007

The Under 14s proved far too strong for visitors Reading and landed a healthy points haul that could prove crucial in the final reckoning at the end of the season. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the game, apart from the scoreline, was the team spirit and commitment to play as a unit. Forwards and Backs linked well, with most of the tries the result of great teamwork.

Maids signalled their intentions early on. Within 30 seconds to be precise - the time it took Thomas Simpson to slice open Reading's defence like the proverbial knife through butter. A second try from Thomas five minutes later, with two conversions from James Brooks, indicated that a high score was in the offing.

Soon after, Michael Habgood nearly broke through with a typical darting run. Mitch Burns and James Parrott connected well and kept the pressure on the visitors. Reading could only try to kick their way out of danger, but they rarely broke into the home side's half. Josh Turvey and Connor Murphy were determined in the driving mauls. There were some great offloads throughout the match, many ably caught by the velcro-handed Elliott Reid, who scored Maids' third from an excellent flowing move. Matt Quinn, Alex Jones and Rory Creffield were in the action that started another flowing move for James Parrot to score and Matt Morgan touched down in the corner with one of the best end-to-end moves of the game. This was exciting stuff and Reading's competent pack would have stopped more tries but for Maids' quick hands and well-timed offloads.

Going into the break 36.0 ahead the boys added a further five tries in the second half. Squad rotations didn't interrupt the rhythm as substitutes slotted in with ease and the well-oiled scoring machine plundered tries at will. To their credit, the visitors put up a good fight, but couldn't make use of the possession they did gain and were always pinned back in their own half.

Still recovering from injury, Ben Pritchard put in a stirring appearance - long enough to make one and score one as the scoreboard ticked over. Great support from Olly Evans put him in the right place to receive Ben's excellent offload and storm under the posts for another. Matt Morgan got in on the act again with his second try. In the Forwards, Mike James and Chris Withers continued their impressive workrate from previous games. Charlie Wickham-Smith crashed through a gap from a scrum five metres out before Paul Sayers completed the scoring. James Brooks's five conversions helped to stretch Maids' advantage.

A job very well done in a game where Maids couldn't afford to be complacent. Despite the high scoreline, Reading were no pushover. They fought well, especially in the Forwards, and never stopped running.
