Maidenhead Under 13s concluded their first ever Berkshire League campaign with a resounding 56-5 victory over Redingensians. This left Maids ruing their one poor performance of the season against Newbury which results in them finishing 2nd, despite scoring the most tries in the league and having the best points differential. Maids were expecting a tough encounter with old rivals Redingensians who had recently only just lost in the final minute of the game to Newbury, the only side to beat Maids in the league this season. In fact, whilst the scoreline would suggest otherwise, this was a tight game of forwards vs. backs, the well-drilled Redingensians’ forwards winning turnover after turnover, and the Maids backs using what ball they did win to maximum effect. Outside centre Daniel Andrews-Jones opened the scoring for Maidenhead in simple yet effective fashion: Ed Kaye won the ball in the forwards and fed fly half William Thompson who fed inside centre Leo Smith who held the defence to release his outside man. Openside flanker Chris Dow opened his account with a great solo run, with his try converted by Sam Maguire. No. 8 Alex Avery notched another for the back row with a great blindside run from the back of a ruck, before Leo Smith struck rather nearer the posts for Maguire to slot his second of the day. A trademark interception from Chris Dow rounded off the half and saw Maids with a 29-0 lead. Redingensians clearly had the better half-time talk as they struck back within moments of the restart, but – as far as points were concerned, anyway – that was as good as it got for the visitors. Fantastic defence from Leo Smith in particular, great resilience from all the forwards and a season’s best performance from Sam Balfour in the second row saw Maids resist all attack and launch attack after attack. Alex Avery finished off one move, Leo Smith the next and Chris Dow popped up to take his hat-trick, the latter try converted again by Sam Maguire. Daniel Andrews-Jones crossed for his second of the day before Max O’Connor, with limited space and three men to beat, weaved his way through to bring the final score to 56-5. Scorers: Daniel Andrews-Jones (2); Chris Dow (3); Alex Avery (2); Leo Smith (2); Max O’Connor; Conversions: Sam Maguire (3) The Squad: |
