Despite a number of absences due to school commitments, county cricket training and injury, Maids took 2 squads to Teddington on Sunday morning and came away with two comfortable wins. The Stags played first against Teddington’s A squad, several whom looked as if they had been eating at least 3 shredded wheat for breakfast for the past few years! Markus Olivier, returning to fitness after a bad knee ligament injury, ignored the fact that the scrum was going backwards and downhill to pick up and run half the length of the pitch to open the scoring, with a fine conversion from Will Thompson. Just in case anyone had missed this, Markus proceeded to do pretty much the same thing again a few minutes later, charging back up the hill, pausing only briefly for an imperious hand off, before scoring a second. On this occasion he was further out from the posts, though, making the kick just too far out for comfort. This was the story of the first half, as Teddington kick offs down a pronounced slope lead to contests for the ball in the Maids’ half before break away tries up the hill built a commanding lead. Next on the score sheet was Thomas Eckles rounding off a great example of handling down the back line after a neatly timed pass from Daniel Andrews-Jones. Daniel then took the score to 22-0 after a good team effort with plenty of interpassing, and openside Chris Dow rounded off the half ripping the ball from a maul and sprinting from half-way to score. Will Thompson once again obliged with the conversion. Sitting on a 29 point advantage, Maids could have been expected to ease off slightly in the second half, but within a few moments of the restart Markus Olivier, now playing at outside centre, once again combined power and pace to score from long distance. A brilliant piece of handling combined with fast, evasive running saw LD Basson run the ball in to extend the lead, but this stung Teddington into action and on a rare visit to the Maids’ half some soft tackling saw the hosts get some points on the board. A fine solo effort from Daniel Andrews-Jones saw him outpace the defence to mark Maids’ final score, and while Teddington were controversially awarded a second try towards the end of the game the result was never in doubt. Final score:
Teddington 12 – 44 The Stags squad: The Bulls continued where they left off against Windsor by playing most of the first half camped in Teddington's half - with good individual runs and support by the forwards, it didn't take long for the first try to come, George Thomas breaking through some loose tackling to score in the right hand corner. Shortly after, Jason Bates, showing his best form of the season, followed in similar fashion to also score in the right hand corner. The third try of the half came from the backs with Iain Whiteford cleverly kicking into space with Dhruv Surya running through to get the kindest of bounces into his hands and have a clear run to the line. All substitutes were brought on for the second half and for a while, it looked as if the team had lost a bit of direction, but by mid way through the second half, all was right again and Fred Reid burst out of a ruck to cross the line and then broke through three tackles in the deadball area in an effort to get closer to the posts before touching down - alas the conversion was missed. Final try of the game from promising No.8 Jake Dawson who broke off from the back of a 5M scrum to crash over the line. Iain Whiteford kicked two conversions. An excellent result for the first game of 2007 with good individual performances all round. Final Score:
Teddington 0 – 29 The Bulls Squad
