Maids beat Henley in a bad tempered and aggressive fixture on Sunday. The teams had been involved in some tough fixtures in recent weeks and the match up was eagerly anticipated by all of the squad. A few commentators felt Maids had been hard done by in refereeing decisions at a mixed training session over at Redingensians back in November and there was chance this match was going to be a toughie. It was! The A’s ended up winning 4 tries to 3 and the B’s pulled back from a 3-1 half time score to equalise the game at the end – both excellent results. The B’s game in particular was a tight close game with strong forward play, a little lost back line discipline but strong showings from new lad Emilio led to two excellent tries and one disallowed for a shall we say dubious touch line decision – but a good tempered game all around really. Max got the first try and well deserved it was. The A’s game was bad tempered and that just served to distract from the excellent rugby played by some of the players, which was a very high standard from a few boys in particular. Tries from George Dutton began the come encounter but this was soon brought level by a crashing ball from Henley within 5 minutes. Colin Kerin’s unfortunately couldn’t ground the ball after crossing the line but this was soon forgotten after a marvellous interception and run for the line over the majority of the pitch…great stuff. Henley scored three good tries and their second row were very strong in defence, but their backs failed to stand up to tough attacking a few too many times and Maids pulled back to 3-3 with 2 minutes to go…for some reason time then stopped and a further 8 minutes were played before it was declared there were 2 minutes left to play… The second half therefore was a few minutes extra than the first but Maids pulled out a stunning attack in the final seconds of the game and Matt Balmer scored a crash ball try in the final seconds. Marvellous to see. Tries from George Dutton, Colin Kerins and two second half tries from Matt Balmer made this a great day. Man of the match when to Christian Horn in the A’s game and to Martin Harris in the B’s. |
