All the hard work and effort put in by players, coaches and parents came to fruition on the concrete hard pitches at Burnham on Sea. The Maidenhead under 10's A's have come a long way this season and played as a team that refused to take a backward step. A nervous start on Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw with a Welsh Team. Two big wins followed and then a heartbreaking interception try resulted in a win for Bromley completely against the run of play in the dying seconds of day one. Maidenhead's possession was superior and growing in each game on day two. Massive efforts by Player of the tournament Daniel Morgan up front, complimented by equally strong efforts by front row colleagues Cameron Gray (C) and Connor Stevens ensured that the opposition never got going on the ball before being smashed back in the fast and furious tackles that these three rained in all weekend. In the backs at scrum half football (boo hiss) returnee, Tom Dutton was fearless at 9. Tommy Roberts at fly continues to grow and grow in skill confidence and physicality. Centres Matt Bourne and Chris Gill were never found wanting. Gill's rugby brain never ceases to surprise, while most improved player of the festival Bourne has found a new dimension to his attacking game . The 3 wings used never let anyone down with breathtaking runs and rock like defence. Jinking runs by Danny Blackwell reminded one older observer of a Welsh player called Shane Williams!!??. David James was as always devastating in the tackle area while Ellie Rayer did what Ellie does best...she finished tries from all over the park. They won all the games on Sunday. The finale being a nerve-jangling affair against much fancied Old Rutlishians. A well deserved 2-0 win sealed a win earning them the plate and centre stage at Pontins that night!! |
