The Maidenhead RFC U9’s "Tigers" and "Lions" teams travelled to Ealing RFC on Sunday. They were met by a freezing wind. The absence of a couple of key players resulted in a series of positional changes being made. Despite this, the Tigers eventually held a very strong Ealing outfit to a deserved draw. An early period of territorial domination by the Tigers unfortunately resulted in Ealing taking the lead through a breakaway try. The Tigers took some time to adjust to the positional changes and their first half support play suffered. Several good attacking breaks by Chris Gill and Matt Bourne left them isolated and their good work was not able to impact the score line. Some excellent tackling by David James and Michael Egan kept the Tigers in the game. Things began to come together for the Tigers in the second half. One of several bullocking charges from Daniel Morgan resulted in the equalising try after he was pushed over the try-line by David James. The team changes made to the Tigers had the inevitable knock-on effect on the Lions. Despite this, the Lions put up a brave fight. They never gave up in the miserable conditions but despite, brave tackling from Oliver Murphy and good all round performances from Oliver Newton and Jeremy Garrett, they eventually succumbed to a defeat. Liam Haines deserves special mention after putting in excellent performances for both the Lions and Tigers teams.
