The Maidenhead RFC U9’s "Tigers" and "Lions" teams welcomed Beaconsfield RFC and Ridgeway School to Braywick on Sunday. The Tigers emerged victorious from a very physical encounter with Beaconsfield. Despite having most of the possession the Tigers had to settle for a single Tommy Roberts try for victory. The score-line belied their dominance. Chris Gill repeatedly broke through the Beaconsfield defence. David James was twice cut down within a yard of the line in the second half, as was Danny Blackwell in the last minute. A disallowed Ridgeway School try in the last minute meant the Tigers were to emerge unbeaten from the day’s encounters. Both teams fought hard in an even match dominated by forward play. Daniel Morgan’s try opened the scoring for the Tigers. However a breakaway try and a superb individual effort by Jack Ingall from Ridgeway left the Tigers reeling. The match was eventually drawn following a move, which saw Tommy Roberts, and Ellie Rayer criss-crossing the pitch to produce superb try. The "Lions" team continues to develop, and despite losing to a well-organised Beaconsfield first team, victory against the visitors’ second team was just reward for the team’s hard work. The main difference in their match with Beaconsfield’s first team was the visitor’s organisation. A number of the Lions team have only recently joined the side, and Beaconsfield took full advantage of the Lions inexperience. However the Lions didn’t let their heads go down and continued to fight until the final whistle with Ollie Murphy and Michael Egan in particular showing committed tackling. In contrast, an encouraging victory was recorded against Beaconsfield’s second team. The Lions showed a good mix of solid defensive work and quick attacking running in the game. Try saving tackles from Rory Jenkins and Michael Egan prevented the home side’s defences being breached. Harry Hood, despite only recently joining the team, was ever present at the breakdown, and is proving to be an enthusiastic mauler for the Lions. Luke Jordan had an outstanding game scoring two ties, the first of which saw him superbly sidestep the defence and run from the half-way line to score. Further tries from Ben Morris and Ollie Murphy completed a well-deserved 4-0 win for the Lions. Teams "Lions" -, Cameron Moffat, Falco Swinfen-Wilkes, Harry Hood, James Cook, Keegan Curlewis, Luke Jordan, Oliver Murphy, Oliver Newton, Rhys Brooker, Rory Jenkins, Michael Egan , Chris Morgan. |
