Maids scoop the pot at U9s
U9s at the Maidenhead Tournament
Sunday 17th October 1999
| BOTH Maidenhead under nine A and B
teams fought off strong competition from teams including
Windsor and Cleve, from Bristol, to win their age
sections at Sunday's tournament. The under nines have a large squad which shows the popularity of youth rugby at this age in Maidenhead and this enabled then to field a 3rd team called the Baabaas who also put up a highly credible performance and who were only beaten by their own B team. The A team were unbeaten but looked at times as though their defence would be overrun. However determined and resilient defending from the Maids full-backs, Zak Thomas, Harrison Wilkinson and Elliott Moore kept the opposition at bay. Edward Clarke was magnificent on the day demonstrating skill and understanding of the game way beyond his age as well as scoring five tries throughout the tournament. Speedy winger Andrew Mudge also bagged five tries, with William Western-Kaye again proving his worth notching up a notable four tries. Sheer driving force from Jamie Watts enabled him to score a hat trick against Winchester. The deciding match was against Windsor, a game played mostly in Maids half. Billy Thompson, Harrison Wilkinson,Graeme Loveday and Oliver Headley all tackled superbly to ensure that this important match was won by Maids. Warren Bishop, Joshua Radley and William Scofield contributed and provided excellent support play during all of the matches. The B
team only conceded two tries in the whole of the
tournament proving their complete dominance of the B
competition. Exceptional performances came from Joe Bough
and Ryan Wenborn who between them clocked up 60 points. |
