The U9s were pleased to be able to field an ‘A’ & a ‘B’ squad in this years Maidenhead Tournament.

In the A tournament (The Sharks) started well against Hazlemere. The boys have just added tackling to their game and were very proficient in defence of their line.
James Parrott and Ben Pritchard made some good fine solid tackles and Duncan Jones, Morgan Davies and William Thompson all made good driving runs.
Both teams had a try disallowed but the vast majority of play was conducted in the Hazlemere half. Despite this, the Sharks failed to make the pressure count and the game finished as a scoreless draw.

In their next game against Winchester it was the same story. Sharks looked the better team with their line rarely challenged. The boys were playing as individuals and their passing was non-existent and despite some excellent runs by Paul Sayers, Charlie Whickham-Smith & William Thompson, this resulted in a scoreless first half. In the second half William Thompson finally got Sharks on the scorecard after some driving runs by Duncan Jones, Ben Pritchard and Sam McCarthy. Moments later, the sharks defence let them down and Winchester equalised. The match finished as a draw with both sides scoring one try.

The Sharks then played Cleve, the eventual tournament winners. Cleve played as a team and passed the ball well, highlighting the Sharks weakness in this area and this resulted in Cleve scoring 3 tries by half time. Again in the second half Sharks were still playing as too many individuals but Paul Sayers managed to get 1 try back for Sharks and the final result had Cleve winning deservedly by 4 tries to-1 winners.

Before the next match the Sharks coaches emphasised the need for teamwork and this combined with a few positional changes made a dramatic difference. Against Windsor, the Sharks started well with good runs from Daniel Tydeman, Alex Ridgeway. Morgan Davies finishing off one attack in fine style scoring his first try of the day. Then Sam McCarthy scored after some excellent attacking play between James Parrott and Ben Pritchard followed by another from Duncan Jones making make the Sharks 3 tries up at half time.

In the second half the Sharks new found teamwork really paid off. Ben Pritchard, James Parrott, Sam McCarthy and Charlie Wickham-Smith were solid in defence and after good driving play involving Alex Ridgeway, Paul Sayers and Duncan Jones, William Thompson scored to make it 4-0. Duncan Jones went over for his second try of the match before Windsor managed to pull one back to make it 5-1 to the Sharks. The Sharks managed 2 more tries by Paul Sayers and William Thompson and the match finished with the Sharks winners by at 7 tries to 1.

The Sharks final match was against Ruislip. The boys passing was much improved and after some first-rate attacking moves involving Morgan Davies, William Thompson and James Parrott, Paul Sayers scored for Sharks. Ruislip attacked The Sharks line but fine defensive work by all the boys kept the score to 1-0 at half time. In the second half Morgan Davies made it 2-0 to the Sharks and William Thompson ran in the 3rd try after a good driving run from Ben Pritchard. The final score leaving the Sharks winners by 3 tries to nil.

Despite only loosing one game, The Sharks were placed 3rd in the tournament.

‘B’s

In the ‘B' Tournament the Maidenhead Piranhas started well against Winchester.

Miguela Kerins, who ripped the ball from a startled Winchester opposition and sprinted for the line, scored their first try. Elliot Reed then scored again for the Piranhas after some superior passing between Sebastian Owen and Lucy Duffy.

David Walker played an outstanding game in defence; his pace onto the opposition gave them little chance to mount an attack. A first-class attacking move involving Miguela Kerins, Jamie Caddell and Thomas Simpson with Tristian Cadden finishing off, made it 3-0 to Piranhas. Elliot Reed scored again giving the Piranhas a deserved win by 4 tries to nil.

The Maidenhead Piranhas were next up against Ruislip. Again the team was superb; David Walker, Jamie Kiddell and Sebastian Owen all put in first-rate tackles. Jamie Kiddell got the first try after some superior attacking play involving Miguela Kerins, Sam Yates and Thomas Simpson. Elliott Reed then scored the first of his 4 tries in this game. After some fine attacking play David Walker scored and then Alex Bourdais added another to make it a 7 tries to nil 0 win for the Piranhas.

The ‘B’s Third and final game was against Windsor. This game was dominated by the superb running of Elliot Reed. He went over the line 4 times against a flagging Windsor defence. Again David Walker, Jamie Caddel and Thomas Simpson all put in some excellent tackles and this meant the final score was four tries to nil to in favour of the Piranhas.

The ‘B’s won their tournament without conceding a single try. This was an outstanding all round team performance.
