U9s versus Basingstoke and Camberley

Tigers extend unbeaten run

Lions make good progress

The Maidenhead RFC U9’s "Tigers" and "Lions" teams travelled to Basingstoke last Sunday for a 3-way challenge with Camberley RFC and Basingstoke RFC.

The Tigers continued their unbeaten run with a win against Basingstoke and a draw against Camberley. In the match against Basingstoke the Tigers pressure was eventually rewarded with a try from Chris Gill. A quick follow-up try was unfortunately disallowed when Daniel Morgan was penalised for handing off the opposition. Despite being penalised for some high tackling, a try from Tommy Roberts sealed the win for the Tigers.

The Tigers were unlucky not to win against Camberley when a small relapse in their defensive cover allowed Camberley through for a breakaway try. The move started very close to Camberley’s own touchline. Unfortunately 2 superb running tries from Daniel Morgan and Chris Gill were not enough to seal victory as Camberley were able to equalise with virtually the last move of the match.

The Lions team started their campaign well against Basingstoke. Tries from Oliver Newton and Liam Haines together with some great play by Luke Jordan and Rhys Brooker forced a valuable draw.

The match against Camberley was a tougher affair. Tom Debiase scored the Lions only try after an excellent run. Despite a lot of aggressive play from Matt Bourne, good forward play from James Cook and some good tackling from Cameron Moffat , Camberley were to win by 3 tries to 1. The Lions were unlucky not to pull a try back when Luke Jordan was tackled just short of the line.

Matt Bourne made a particularly heroic contribution to this fixture as he played for both the Tigers and the Lions.
