U9s at the Saracens Tournament

Sunday 4th November 2001

It was an early start for the Maids U9 squad who travelled to the Saracens Tournament on Sunday.

Maids first game was against Harrow and the boys started well with some thoughtful passing and driving runs from Morgan Davies, Ben Pritchard and Elliott Reid. After a long period of play in the Harrow half a move involving William Thompson, Sam McCarthy saw Elliott Reid put Maids in front.
Harrow fought back and managed to equalise just before half time. Maids were not about to give up; excellent tackling by William Thompson kept Maids hopes alive and after a period of pressure Maids passed to the powerful Elliott Reid and he scored Maids winning try.

The next game was against home team Saracens. Maids had recently beaten Saracens at Marlow . Maids started well with some good runs from Duncan Jones, Morgan Davies , Paul Sayers and Daniel Tydeman.
Alex Ridgeway and William Thompson tackled well but despite many chances, Maids could not get over the line. It was 0-0 at half time.
In the second half Maids scored when Morgan Davies found a gap in Saracens defence. Saracens came back immediately to equalise. After some missed tackles and missed chances the score remained a fair 1-1 draw.

The final game in their Pool was against Caldicott. Caldicott were a big, well drilled side and Maids had to keep their concentration at all times.
After some sustained pressure from Maids with moves involving Sam Yates, David Walker and Duncan Jones, Duncan just squeezed in the corner to make it 1-0 to Maids. Maids kept up the pressure and Morgan Davies scored their second try to make Maidenhead winners of Pool A.

The Semi-final was against Sandal. Sandal were an excellent side and despite a first half try by Paul Sayers, Maids had tired and Sandal equalised before half time. In the second half Maids were outplayed by Sandal (the eventual tournament winners) but Maids kept defending their line and finished a creditable 2-1 down.

Squad :- James, Parrott, Morgan Davies, Sam McCarthy, Duncan Jones, Ben Pritchard, William Thompson, Alex Ridgeway, Paul Sayers, Sam Yates, David Walker, Elliott Reid, Daniel Tydeman.
