U9s entertain Ruislip

Sunday 4th March 2001

The strength of Maidenhead under Nines enabled them to field 3 teams against a depleted Ruislip side during this weekend’s training session/mini-tournament. All 3 sides scored heavily, and solid defending ensured they kept clean sheets in all their matches.

The first squad to play included Patrick Boyd, Hannah Edwards, Chris Cameron, Alex Pegg, Charlie Johnson, Rory Hart, Steven Palmer, Callum Thomas and Duncan James. They made a strong start and led 10-0 at half time with tries from Rory Hart and Patrick Boyd. From the second half whistle Alex Pegg powered his way to the first of the 2 tries he scored in the match. Maidenhead defended well against sporadic Ruislip attacks and, towards the end of the second half, ran the ball the length of the pitch for Callum Thomas to score and seal the game with a 25-0 victory.

The second squad comprised William Cadden, Ben Alderson, Felix O’Sullivan, Jake Quantrill, Phil Roberts, Jordan Foster, Oscar Thomson, Nick Jackson, Ziggy Razuki and Jonathon Funnell. The first few minutes of the match were very tight until Ben Alderson broke away to score. Ben showed his strength at the other end of the pitch with some fine defensive tackling. Quick passing from deep in their own half allowed Felix O’Sullivan to break away and score. William Cadden then scored two tries with long runs and, in the closing seconds of the first half, Oscar Thomson touched the ball down to give a 25-0 lead at half time.

Ruislip were tighter in the second half but Ziggy Razuki took advantage of some loose ball work to cross the line and score. Jonathon Funnell added a final try just before full time to give Maidenhead a 35-0 victory.

The third squad to play included Chris Healy, Ritchie O’Reilly, Gordon Harris, Hugh O’Connor, Morgan Davies, Alex Timms, Miles Ashton, Joe Davidson and Connor MaCarthy. Strong play from the start, and good possession, saw Maidenhead go 1 up with a try from Hugh O’Connor. Ritchie O’Reilly quickly made it 10-0. A swift run from Gordon Harris released Chris Healy to score; this was followed by a try from Morgan Davies. Good passing along the line resulted in Chris Healy scoring his second try of the half, and Maidenhead went into half time 25-0 up. From the restart Maidenhead continued to dominate the game and Morgan Davies scored his second try of the match. Although Ruislip rallied towards the end they were unable to penetrate the Maidenhead defence and finally Joe Davidson scored in the last few seconds to make the final score 35-0.

Players in all 3 squads were a credit to their club and the coaching staff, demonstrating energy, enthusiasm and teamwork.
