U8s enjoy success at Chippenham

Sunday 23rd October 2005

Half term holiday commitments took a heavy toll on the U8s, however we still fielded two teams to visit Chippenham last Sunday.

The Maidenhead Lions got off to a good start with fine support work by William Lawrence earning a brace with Ben Lawrence and Abigail Dow also making the score sheet and finishing with a comfortable 4 tries to 2 win.

The second match for the Lions was somewhat closer but with some great tactical cover of key Chippenham players, the Lions prowled home with a 7 tries to 5 win with some great runs by Scott Prince. William Lawrence earned a well deserved hat-trick, Christopher Cousins a brace with both Joel Green and Lian Cook also scoring.

In the Lion's final match Joel Green found great form with a brilliant hat-trick with Ben Lawrence and William Lawrence adding a try each to win 5 tries to 3. There was some great tagging by the Lions that caused a lot of frustration to the Chippenham attack.

The Maidenhead Tigers first match was real ding-ding battle as try after try being traded to eventually finish honours even at 7 tries all with a superb hat-trick from Oliver Malik and tries from Lawrence Hull, James Millwater, Shane McKenna and Nia Gardner. It was great to see so many players make the score sheet and this reflected the strong teamwork shown by the Tigers.

The second match was against the stronger of the Chippenham sides and despite some great loose ball retrieval by Sam Hoxley, Chippenham capitalized well on a couple of errors to eventually win 8 tries to 6 The Tiger's tries came from Lawrence Hull, William Doolan, Oliver Malik, James Millwater (2) and Shane McKenna.

Spirits remained high and the Tigers really piled on the pressure for their third match forcing errors by Chippenham and then making good use of possession to end up with a 6 tries to 5 win with Oliver Malik earning a pair and one each to James Millwater, William Doolan, Lawrence Hull, and Shane McKenna.

The fixture proved to be a great event with the Lions winning all of their matches and the Tigers showing great spirit and teamwork to earn a win, a draw and a loss. Chippenham were great hosts and we are looking forward to a rematch next season.
