worried faces lined up for their first match of the under
8s competition in the Gullivers mini-rugby tournament at
Brean Sands- This was the boys' first tour, tensions were
high and knees were knocking. Maidenhead v The Tigers. In their next match they faced Bromley Barbarians. Here the boys showed the passing skills they have mastered this season and Ben Pritchard, Henry Burns and Sam McCarthy all scored in quick succession. After a further session where Maidenhead showed good forward play James Parrott went over for his second try of the tournament. A final try came deservedly for Duncan Jones whose tireless running and passing had crafted many of the boys tries. In their third match against Wescombe Park, Maids nerves had dissipated. Tries by Henry Burns, Ben Pritchard, Duncan Jones and James Parrott gave them a half-time lead of 4-2. In the second half the pacey David Walker scored followed by Tristian Cadden. Again Maids defence was solid. Good tackling by Gavin Palmer, David Walker and Sam McCarthy gave Westcombe Park few opportunities and Maids finished 6-4 winners. The final match of day one was against Moortown. After some good passing between Duncan Jones and Sam McCarthy, David Walker raced over the line for the first of his 2 tries in this match. The speedy Henry Burns, always seizing every opportunity, scored a deserved hatrick. Good tackling by Cameron Foster, Ben Pritchard and David Walker allowed Moortown only 2 tries and Maids finished 5-2 winners. Maidenhead went into day 2 unbeaten. They played all the teams from day one again and this time they beat the Tigers 4-3, Wescombe Park 9-4 but just lost out to Bromley Barbarians 3-6. The Maidenhead under 13s had finished their matches and although disappointed at losing their title, joined the group of Maidenhead parents to cheer the boys on. This was an exciting, closely fought match which saw tries by Henry Burns, Tristian Cadden and Ben Pritchard, There was some heroic tackling by all the boys but Maids were just pipped 3-4 by a Moortown team that was eager for revenge. To no avail. The championship was already Maidenhead's who topped their table by 1 point. After this news had sunk in, the tears on the gum-shield chewing faces were replaced by smiles. They undoubtedly played the most attractive rugby in their group. They played as a team and every boy who took part made a vital contribution. Tireless coaches "Grumpy" John McCarthy and "Big" Chris Pritchard get a round of applause from the parents for their perseverance if not their time-keeping!! The Squad were: Duncan Jones, Tristan Cadden, James Parrott, Sam McCarthy, Ben Pritchard, Henry Burns, Gavin Palmer, David Walker and Cameron Foster |
