U8s clean sweep at Marlow

Both the Maidenhead A and B Under 8s won their competitions at the Marlow tournament on Sunday – both won all of their matches in their group, and gave strong performances in the final.

The A team found it harder to score tries than they have done in previous competitions, maybe because defences have become better organised during the season. They will appreciate the bigger pitch (and proper tackling!) when they move through to the Under 9s next year. They won their first game against Amersham & Chiltern 20-10 and then had their hardest match against Ealing, which they won 15-10. Some stout defending allowed them to hold on to their win, but with a few more minutes on the clock this could well have been a draw. They also beat Aylesbury 15-10 – Aylesbury were a very good side, but by this time Maidenhead had got into their stride and were playing more fluidly, moving the ball quicker and getting more pace into the game. They beat Saracens – another very good side – 25-10, and five different boys scored the five tries, showing how good the teamwork was. They went through to meet Redingensians in the final. This was a high-scoring match, with the boys on very good form indeed. They won 35-25.

Try scorers during the competition were: Oscar Thomson (6), Ben Alderson (4), Jacob Cooke (4), Felix O’Sullivan (2), Callum Thomas (2), Jonathan Wright (2), Jordan Foster (1)

Squad: Ben Alderson, Will Ansell, Chris Cameron, Jacob Cooke, Jordan Foster, Chris Heley, Felix O’Sullivan, Callum Thomas, Oscar Thomson, Jonathan Wright

The B team had a very good competition, and swept through in all their matches. In three out of their initial four matches, they conceded only one try in each. They won their first game against Beaconsfield 25-5. Saracens gave them the greatest challenge, but even they couldn’t match them – Maids beat them 30-20, with Richie O’Reilly scoring 5 out of the 6 tries. Ealing were on the receiving end of another 25-5 scoreline, with the same scoreline achieved in beating Thatcham in the last match before the final. Here they met Drifters – and ran in nine tries! The eventual scoreline was 45-20.

Try scorers during the competition were: Richard O’Reilly (15), William Cadden (3), Morgan Davies (3), Alex Pegg (3), Patrick Boyd (1), Charlie JohnTson (1), Haydn Mann (1), Phillip Roberts (1)

Squad: Sam Blackman, Patrick Boyd, William Cadden, Joe Davidson, Morgan Davies, Charlie Johnson, Haydn Mann, Richard O’Reilly, Alex Pegg, Phillip Roberts
