U7s play Redingensians and Wycombe

Sunday 13th February 2005

Last Sunday saw Maidenhead and Wycombe visiting Redingensians for a triangular fixture.

Maidenhead As played very well and showed some great skills in tagging and running with the ball. However there was occasional lack of team work resulting in not making the easy passes which allowed the opposing team to get some simple tries.

Against Redingensians As, Maidenhead had a tough match and showed some good team spirit and came back twice to finish with a 2:2 draw, both tries being scored by Abigail Dow.

In the next match versus Wycombe As, Maidenhead showed some great individual talent and went on to win 6 tries to 4. Maids should have had a better wining margin but some lack of concentration let Wycombe snatch some easy tries. The try scorers were Abigail Dow and Ben Lawrence, both bagging a brace.

Finally against Redingensians B, Maidenhead played well but however eventually went down 4 tries to 5. The game had some difficult to appreciate refereeing decisions especially in the last minute with a disallowed Maidenhead try and allowing a Redingensians try to stand by a player that was tagged many strides from the try line. The tries went to Abigail Dow with another brace and one each to Ben Lawrence and Joel Greene.

Maidenhead Bs had a tough time due to very extensive half-term holiday "casualties" resulting in quite an inexperienced side for the fixture. They got off to a slow start in the early icy conditions, but warmed up as the weather improved!

They played against High Wycombe Bs in their first match and came off second best, going down 6 tries to 1. William Doolan scored the Maids only try with a great run through the middle. Maidenhead found it difficult to hold onto the ball in the cold and conceded too many turnovers.

Things didn't get any easier as they faced High Wycombe As in their second game. After starting well, with Oliver Malik scoring early on, they struggled against the pace of the Wycombe players, eventually finishing behind with 7 tries to 1.

However, full marks for tenacity, as the Maids stuck to their guns and put in a rousing performance against Redingensians Bs in their 3rd match in front of a big crowd and lots of enthusiastic parents! It was a ding-dong battle, as first Maidenhead, and then Redingensians, went in front. Alex Sutton scored first for the Maids, followed by Oliver Malik and then Myles Williamson. 4 tries to 3 down in the final minute, Maidenhead summoned up the energy for one final attack and Myles Williamson again scored in the corner after a blistering run, to even the scores and round off a most enjoyable day.
