U7s share the Plate at Marlow tournament

Sunday 10th April 2005

Last Sunday saw the Maidenhead U7s participate in Marlow's annual minis tournament. It proved to be a really fun day with the team working together well and most of the team getting on to the score sheet. Maids scored a remarkable 29 tries for the day which was the highest of all the teams and in a thrilling final, the silverware was well earned.

Maidenhead got off to their customary sluggish start to Marlow who proved to be one of the strongest sides in the tournament, however Maidenhead came back strongly in the second half and finished one try short of a draw with a final score of 5 tries to 4. Tries came from James Millwater, Jake Jenkins, Harry Wells and Sasha Gill

Spirits were high for the Maids second match against Windsor and a strong defence resulted 4-0 lead at half time. Windsor fought back well during the second half, but could not erode the lead. Good tagging by the team, especially Taran Uppal, Tom Kynaston and Sasha Gil left a final score of 6 tries to 2 with a remarkable 4 tries to very much on form Harry Wells, and one each to Jake Jenkins and James Millwater.

The third match against Wasps proved to be a tough game with both sides playing some great rugby. The match finished honours even at 5 tries all with the Maidenhead tries coming from Jake Jenkins, James Millwater, Kieran Evans, Jonathan Mathews and Oliver Malik.

The last of the league matches was against Redingensians who had provided tough competition at fixtures earlier in the season, however with Maids spirits running high, and some strong runs by Jonathan Mathews and Oliver Malik there was a comfortable 8 tries to 5 win. Oliver Malik claimed a hat trick, Jonathan Mathews a brace, James Millwater, Sasha Gill and Harry Wells also made the score sheet.

This great performance put Maidenhead through to the plate final against London Irish. This was an exciting ding dong battle that left most parents with somewhat shattered nerves, hoarse voices through cheering and a few extra white hairs as the lead kept changing. The final score was 6 tries all so the plate was shared. Both Harry Wells and Oliver Malik bagged well deserved hat tricks.
