U17s against London Irish

London Irish U17s v Maidenhead U17s
Sunday 30th January 2005

Maidenhead took time off from their BBO League campaign to play was they thought was a full-squad friendly against London Irish, at Sunbury. London Irish possibly had different ideas, dumping their squad players from early in the match, bringing on their top players and running out winners by 31-0.

Maids, who had earlier defeated a Grove side which heavily beat London Irish, were without their captain, their vice captain, were eventually without all three line-out jumpers, started without both regular scrum-halves and the regular fly-half, made in all 12 changes to the normal starting team and played with 14 men for part of the second half as injuries mounted.

Skipper Dave Hodgson and scrum-half Olly Styles both pulled out after the warm-up. Maids played with typical courage, with Richard Chaytor and Will Grant stepping up to play with great courage and stand-in skipper Mitch Batten also played well. Ben Tucker battled strongly in the pack.

The first half was a competitive affair with Maids unlucky not to score on several occasions. However with the mounting injuries and the coaches relunctance to bring on those carrying knocks the second half became rather pointless . But the sprit still showed as the 14 men, which included 5 front row forwards, rallied and spent the last 10 minutes camped on the LI line and did everything but score.

Maidenhead squad was:
Sam Stefan, Chris Richardson, Alex Cannon, Chris Adam, Elliot Hawkes, Pat McSweeney, Jack Robinson, Ben Tucker, Mitch Batten, Luke Knowles, Andrew Mitchell, Adam Dauncey, Drew Jones, Tom Morgan, Ashley Hanks, Andrew Hogan, Will Grant, Richard Chaytor
