U17s emerge victorious from Beaconsfield swamp

Beaconsfield U17s 9 v Maidenhead U17s 15
Sunday 28th November 2004

On Sunday the intrepid U17s entered the Primeval Swamp that passes for a pitch at Beaconsfield. Given the conditions is wasn't surprising that life in the form of flowing rugby only made a few tentative evolutionary steps.

Both teams were keen to play a friendly game where different combinations could be tried out without the pressure of a league game. However the lottery of the conditions meant that not a lot was learnt by either team. Maids rested several players who had minor injuries but eventually ran out winners in what was still a competitive game against their old adversaries.

In the first half Beaconsfield kicked off down the slope. Kick off being a misnomer as not one drop kick was managed all game. The half was characterised by numerous handling errors and penalties by both sides. The only scores coming from the boot with Beaconsfield leading 6-3 at half-time.

After the break Maids slowly began to assert themselves with the slope now in their favour. The hard work from the forwards (well the backs rarely saw the ball) eventually paying off when Andrew Mitchell drove over in the corner. With Dave having taken a knock, Richard Chaytor made a creditable attempt at the conversion.

Despite another penalty to Beaconsfield, further pressure from Maids was rewarded when Ryan Christian intercepted a pass and gave us a rare sighting of a back moving at speed as he scored under the posts. Chris Richardson converted to make the final score 15-9.

Maidenhead's squad was:
