London Welsh U17s v Maidenhead U17s

Sunday 26th September 1999

For their first game Maidenhead under 17 visited Old Deer Park to take on old rivals London Welsh.
With perfect playing conditions Maids kicked off and immediately put Welsh under pressure.
Forwards and backs combined to take play to within five metres of the home line and Maids were awarded a scrum.
From quick heel scrum half Murphy wrong-footed the opposition and linked well with full back Pincott for him to open the scoring.
The score seemed to galvanise Welsh and they stormed back. A combination of poor handling under pressure and Welsh determination brought play to just five metres from the Maids line.
From a Welsh scrum hooker Lambden stole a heel against the head, the ball was passed to Stuart Douglas at outside half and he put a long kick deep into Welsh territory.
Flanker Meredith was quick to chase the ball but from the ensuing play Welsh were awarded a penalty. They kicked to touch and were awarded a line-out.
Pressure from Maids caused handling errors against Welsh and Maids pushed back towards their opponents line before having a scrum awarded against them.
Lambden took another heel against the head and from five metres out Murphy powered over for another try.
However complacency and a lack of match fitness resulted. in Maids being driven back from the restart The visitors' game started to disintegrate and too many basic errors were made.
The result was that Maids allowed the Welsh back into their territory, where they remained camped around the 22-metre line until half-time.
Turning round with the score 10-0 and with several substitutes on, Maids renewed their efforts and made substantial gains into Welsh territory.
From another heel against the head Maids moved the ball swiftly along the line for Seb Bishop, playing at centre, to cross for the final score of the match.
Maidenhead’s play in several areas needs to be improved, especially in the line-out and scrum. There were some outstanding periods of play when Maids kept their concentration, but overall lack of fitness showed in too many players.
Nevertheless it was a good start to the season.
