Sunday 24th September 2000
| Maidenhead under17's stepped up a
level on Sunday when they entertained the select Bedford
Rugby Club under 17 academy and were pleased to see them
off with an impressive all round team performance. Maids took an early 5-0 lead through Matthew Ansell when he was on hand toreceive a fine flip pass after a great break down the right by centre Nils Mordt. The inside ball and the excellent angle of his run set him up for a great score. The home side were playing really effectively up front where the addition of new signing Gareth May at No.8 has added more aggression to the pack. Along with Tom Guest and Lee Page they now present a formidable back row, which was making the difference throughout the early ecchanges. They added to their lead shortly after a set scrum on the right saw the ball passed down the line with winger Damien Bell released into space and he made 30 meters before being pulled down by a covering defender, releasing the ball to Mordt who had made an excellent support run. His driving charge received good support from the pack resulting in a desreved pushover try nearv the corner falg, which saw and really great convertion by Simon Ward to put them 12-0 ahead. It appeared that the Bedford Academy side are unused to trailing and they were unsettled in their game, allowing Maidenhead to take the initiative in the forward play. One spell of outstanding forward play saw Maids drive Bedford back 20 meters after successive hits from an inspired Tom Guest with support from May, Chris Cracknell, Christian Pedersen and flanker Steve Bennett. This was forward play of a really impressive standard from this talentd age group. They added to their lead when slick handling in the backs released Bell who made good ground before securing the ball for Maids. From the resulting scrum, scrum half Gareth Edwards dummied a pass and ran flat across the Beds defence before picking out Mordt coming into the line at pace to run in under the posts, with Ward convereting to make it 19-0 at the break. The visitors competed more in the second half but rarely looked to trouble Maids, however a splendid tackle from Inn Lee towards the end of the match ensured the clean sheet for the home side. |
