U17s convincing win over Hants Champs

Maidenhead U17s 59pts v Alton U17s 7pts

Sunday 22nd April 2001

Maidenhead U17's hosted Hampshire champions Alton at Braywick on Sunday and ran out convincing 59-7 winners.

Maids had the advantage of a following wind in the first half and used it to pin Alton in their own half for much of the opening exchanges. Maids were firing in all departments with halfbacks Gareth Edwards and Daniel Martin deploying both backs and forwards to punch holes in the visitors defence before Edwards himself darted through a gap to score from 40 yards out. The pattern of play was now set and Maids came back with more of the same with full back Jonathan Hammond sidestepping three defenders for Maids second score. Maids forwards were dominating Alton who provide most of the Hampshire pack and a series of clinical drives by prop Terry Rainer and flanker Chris Cracknell soon had Maids back in enemy territory before releasing centres Nils Mordt and Matthew Ansell who created the overlap and put winger Damien Bell over for Maids third try. Centres Mordt and Ansell continued running unorthodox lines which created confusion in the Alton defence (and their own team mates) but it worked and a panicked clearance of a Martin chip kick was charged down by Edwards and Cracknell was quickest to the ball for the home side's fourth try. Good rucking from prop Chris Young and two powerful surges from second rows Christian Pedersen and Adam O'Reilly pushed the visitors back into their own 22 from the restart and forced a penalty. Maids backs ran the ball wide to both wings before Ansell darted through for the fifth try and a half-time score of 35-0.

Ansell continued in the same vein after the restart, charging down a hurried clearance and following through for his second try. Alton then came back with some good forward play and scored a try, which their efforts richly deserved. The rally was brief however, with Maids now dominating the scrummages and hooker Simon Ball winning several against the head to keep Alton pinned in their own half. Number 8 Tom Guest capped another storming performance by picking up from the base of the scrum and surging through from the halfway line for his opening try. Substitutes Elliott Greenham and David Gull were immediately in the thick of the action, securing the ball from the restart, to launch flanker Charlie Branch upfield and three passes later winger Bell burst through two tacklers for his second score. The final action came when a powerful run by winger James Carne and a lobbed pass set Guest clear for a well deserved second try. Mordt converted seven from nine for a final score of 59-7 to Maids in what was a first class team performance.
