Yet again, Maidenhead U-17s were able to overcome their current injury crisis and record their second successive win in the BBO Champions League, when they gave what was in long periods a disappointing performance against Aylesbury in windy weather at Braywick. No fewer than nine Maidenhead players had to miss the match with injury, though most should be fit for the resumption of the League campaign in the New Year - powerful forward Adam Dauncey, one of several players new to the squad this season, managed to injury himself alighting from a bus. |

So old Maids favourites Marcus Shah and Christian Paul, were called up to appear for the first time for over a year and big Joe Thomas, last season’s captain, made his first appearance of the season, coming on as replacement in the second half. All three made a significant impact. When Maids applied themselves, they were highly-effective. They scored tries excellent tries in the first half, one from Andrew Mitchell, who had a superb match, and the other from aggressive full-back Sam Stefan – Stefan’s aggression came in handy in the second half when further injuries led to Stefan switching to the back-row. These Canadians are tough! One conversion by Dayne Ferrar at fly-half made it 12-0 at half-time to Maids. |

Yet Maidenhead’s forward effort, their organisation and their drive all dipped alarmingly. Some of the rucking and support play became very poor and it took a try by Aylesbury to bring the score to 12-7 to remind Maids that there was more to the game than a lap of honour. The outstanding cover defence of Alex Cannon and Andy Hogan saw to it that no more tries were conceded, Eventually, Maids switched back on and they killed Aylesbury off with two superb tries when fierce rucking and combinations between backs and forwards set up the chance. Dave Hodgson, back to his best form of late, scored both, the second after brilliant approach work from Ferrar. Hodgson completed the scoring with two regal conversions. |
