Brighton U17s 14pts v Maidenhead 68 pts
Sunday 19th November 2000
| Maidenhead U17's
travelled to Brighton on Sunday to meet the current
Sussex champions. Injury and absence on representative
duty left Maids with only two replacements but still a
lot of quality in the side as Brighton found out. Straight from the kick off. Adam O'Reilly took the ball and set up the first attack. No 8 Tom Guest sliced his way through midfield before moving the ball out to centre Matt Ansell who looped round the Brighton defence to score from 40 yards out. The impressive home support was stunned two minutes later when Maids forwards drove half the length of the pitch before scrum half Gareth Edwards combined with centre Stuart Douglas to send Ansell over for his and Maids second try. The devastating back row combination of Guest and Gareth May, as they did repeatedly, once again sliced through Brighton's midfield to set up Ansell who crashed through two defenders for his third try in ten minutes. The home side's unbeaten season was clearly under threat and the strains began to show. Brighton conceded a sloppy penalty near their own line and scrum half Edwards flipped the ball to second row O'Reilly, who is unstoppable from two feet out, for Maids fourth try. Maids next try came when full back Matthew Neill caught a high ball near his own line and launched Edwards and Ansell through the midfield. Flanker May crashed through two defenders before releasing Guest on a solo run for his first try of the day. In the final moments of the first half props Terry Rainer and Chris Young drove deep into Brighton's half before releasing O'Reilly from his favourite distance of two feet out for his second try. The half time score was 34-0 to Maids. The second half started with a fine jinking run from the impressive Daniel Martin from which Brighton conceded a penalty. From the restart Guest scythed through for his second try. What appeared to be a certain eighth try for Maids after another fine run by hooker Simon Ball and flanker Charlie Branch was turned around when Brighton intercepted the final pass and returrned it the length of the pitch for their first score. Briefly lifted by their success Brighton then put together a series of drives and went over for their second try in two minutes. Maids had relaxed just enough to let Brighton back in the game and they pressed Maids line again before Guest decided enough was enough, stealing the ball and running eighty yards to score his third try. Martin, Douglas and Ansell then released Guest again but this time the No 8 picked out flying winger Anthony Lane for his first try. Brighton to their credit came back again and Edwards, now full back, combined with James Carne to attack up the left wing before switching play to Guest to score in the right corner. Good work in the loose by prop Elliot Greenham and second row Christian Pedersen set up the next move in which flanker Billy Lewis flipped the ball to Ansell who crashed through the line like a battering ram before moving the ball wide to winger Lane for his second try. The final score of the game came from a flowing move involving just about everybody which saw the ball going from left to right and the full length of the pitch to secure winger Lane's hat trick of tries and provide a fitting finale to a great team performance. At 68-14 the referee stopped the game. |
