U17s beat Marlow in winning start to OBB league

Maidenhead U17s 38 v Marlow U17s 0
Sunday 19th September 2004

Maidenhead made a highly-satisfactory start to their BBO League programme with a 38-0 victory over Marlow at Braywick and given the disruption caused by injuries and tiredness clearly caused by heavy recent involvement in school matches, the coaches were pleased with the seasonal opener.

Less happy was the injury factor. Luke Knowles, the powerful No 8, joined the other injured players on the sidelines after withdrawing just before kick off and Maids were to lose four other players during the game and played much of the second half with full-back Sam Stefan, hero of the Canada tour, filling in courageously as a flanker.

Another minus point was the thumping penalty count conceded by Maids - a ghastly 20 in all. This simple factor kept Marlow from a significantly heavier defeat. As it was, Maids ran up 33 unanswered points in the first half, held out against a series of Marlow attacks and then had the last word with a final try near the end.

Marlow had no answer to Maidenhead's front five in the scrum or to the alacrity in the backline. Tim Johnson stood out for Maids before suffering a cut while Maids' authority from Olly Styles and Dayne Ferrar at half-back and in defence was marked. Ash Hanks was outstanding in the second half.

Alex Cannon's roving role at full-back saw him score two tries in the first half when his pace took him on to well-delivered kicks by Dayne Ferrar. A blistering Maids driving maul led to another try, with Chris Parrott crossing down the left and there were two from Ryan Christian, one of the outstanding Maids players.

The best was the first from Christian, scored in the middle of the first half. A quick line out ball gave Ferrar and Christian the chance to attack from first phase and a superb pass from Ferrar saw Christian cut the Marlow midfield defence to ribbons at high pace.

David Hodgson, marking his first match as captain, kicked four conversions and the final score was a popular effort indeed - Richard Chayter, easing his way back in the squad after a long absence, scored in the left hand corner to seal the victory.

Maidenhead's squad was:
Alex Cannon, Sam Stefan, Andrew Hogan, Elliot Hawkes, Ryan Christian, Anthony Lewis, David Hodgson (capt), Richard Chaytor, Dayne Ferrar, Olly Styles, Chris Adam; Pat McSweeney, Jack Robinson, Ben Tucker, Ash Hanks, Drew Jones, Tom Plumer, Chris Parrott, Mitch Batten, Tim Johnson
