Big Bell Strikes Three for U17s v Winchester
Maidenhead U17s 36pts v Winchester U17s 17pts
Sunday 18th February 2001
| Centre Damien Bell scored a hat
trick of tries as Maidenhead Under 17's completed the
double over Winchester at Braywick on Sunday. It wasn't as easy as the 36-17 scoreline suggested with the Hampshire cup finalists causing a depleted Maids side problems throughout the game. Maids makeshift pack took a while to get itself sorted out but was soon feeding good ball to the backs. Early probing runs from centre Matt Ansell and fly half Dan Martin caused Winchester problems and from a ruck in the opposition half flanker Chris Cracknell raced clear to score Maids opening try. Winchester came straight back and pinned Maidenhead in their own 22 but could not penetrate the defence. Failing to convert an ensuing penalty left the visitors with nothing to show for their early pressure. From the restart Maids launched a series of attacks with prop Terry Rainer and second row Charlie Branch driving through midfield before the other prop Chris Young did a plausible impersonation of a centre with a darting run to send Bell over for his first score. Centre Matt Ansell was at the end of a sweeping move to get in on the act with Maids third try before Winchester knew what hit them. Full back Matthew Neill and winger Anthony Lane combined from their own 22 to launch Maids next attack after a promising move for Winchester broke down. Carried on by scrum half Gareth Edwards, the move broke down when Winger Ian Lee was forced into touch just short of the opposition line. No.8 Tom Guest, who had another dominant game, stole the ball at the lineout to send the backs away and Bell over for Maids fourth try and a halftime score of 24-0. Winchester were revitalised in the second half although play was very broken with a series of minor infringements. The visitors had the better of this phase with a well worked try and a fortunate interception and try just as Maids were about to score themselves. Spurred into action again Guest and hooker Simon Ball drove Maids forward and after probing runs by Martin and Ansell scrum half Edwards burst clear to send Bell over for his hat trick. At 31-14 the match was won and a Winchester penalty was more than matched by a Matt Neill try for a final score of 36-17. An excellent weekend for the U17's ended with news that two players, full back Jonathan Hammond and centre Nils Mordt had been chosen to represent England at Under 18 level. |
