U17s strength in depth overcomes Winchester

Winchester U17s 3pts v Maidenhead U17s 39 pts

Sunday 15th October 2000

A depleted Maidenhead U17's team travelled to Winchester on Sunday with just 17 fit boys. Winchester always provide tough opposition and without 5 regular starters this was going to be a good test for the squad.

Maidenhead kicked off away from the two packs and winger Ian Lee narrowly missed out on an opening try with the opposition taken completely by surprise. Maidenhead didn't have to wait long however, when after sustained forward pressure, winger Matt Ansell hit the Winchester backs like a rhino to break through and score the opening try. Maids pack was particularly impressive in this phase with excellent rucking by Chris Young and Terry Rainer setting up good second phase ball. Flanker Gareth May was always sniping around the fringes and got his reward when he crashed over for Maids second try.

The backs were enjoying more than their fair share of possession and centres Nils Mordt and Simon Ward again punched through the Winchester defence to set Ansell away for his second try. Maids fourth try came when hooker Simon Ball burst clear and released No.8 Tom Guest on a long solo run. Guest eluded the last two defenders with a neat sidestep before crossing the line. With two conversions from Ward the halftime score was 24-0.

Winchester got on the scoreboard when they converted an early second half penalty. Spurred by the points Winchester created some good pressure and Maids needed some staunch defending from Ansell and fullback Matt Neill to turn the initiative back in their favour. The Maids half back pairing of Gareth Edwards and Dan Martin combined to devastating effect to slice through the home defence leaving winger Lee with a gentle jog into the corner for Maids fifth try. Winchester looked beaten now and Lee almost immediately powered over for his second try, after good work by the second row combination of Christian Pedersen and Adam O'Reilly.

Maids final try came after a storming run to the tryline by flanker Charlie Branch who drew two defenders and popped the ball to Mordt who powered over for a final score of 39-3. The whole team performed well and the match demonstrated the strength in depth in the squad.
