| Maidenhead U17's met
Berkshire U18's in a friendly on Sunday. Maids started the game impressively and a thundering tackle in the opening seconds by prop Terry Rainer let the bigger boys know that Maids meant business. Several flowing moves by the backs and excellent support from forwards Gareth May and Steve Bennett set up the first try for full back Matt Ansell who had an excellent game. More of the same followed and centres Nils Mordt and Simon Ward punched a hole in the County defence to send winger Damien Bell over in the corner for Maids second try. The County team were a little shell shocked by now and Maids forwards drove half the length of the pitch in five successive rucks before flanker Chris Cracknell drove over for Maids third try. The next try and Maids fourth came when good work by No8 Tom Guest and scrum half Gareth Edwards set fly half Daniel Martin off on a solo run through a crowded midfield, evading several tackles to score. Maids dominance faltered briefly when the County winger intercepted a loose pass to run in a solo try but their delight was short lived as hooker Simon Ball and Adam O'Reilly set up an attack from the kick off which led to winger Bell scoring his second try of the game. Maids made a number of changes at this point and County came back with two quick tries while the new boys were settling in but Maids quickly re-established control with some staunch defensive work by props Chris Young and Elliot Greenham keeping the bigger boys at bay. Flanker Charlie Branch almost got clear for a final score but the end result of 27-15 to Maids was a highly satisfactory outcome to a good days work. |
