University challenge overcome by Maids

Maidenhead U17s 65 v University Vandals U17s 5

Sunday 10th October 1999

In near ideal conditions Maidenhead under 17 hosted University Vandals, winners of two seven-a-side tournaments last season and won handsomely 65-5.
Maidenhead elected to kick off and from the start put Vandals under pressure. Although the visitors were driven deep into their half a simple infringement conceded a penalty allowing them to clear their lines.
Regaining possession, Maids forwards drove forward, each time breaking the gain line before popping the pass to the next man.
Having sucked in the 'defence the ball was spun to the backs and inside centre Seb Bishop could see the line and had no need of a three man overlap to open the scoring.
Vandals restarted and kicked deep allowing Maids to drive forward forcing the visitors deep.
From yet another drive the ball was passed out to Douglas at fly-half who stepped inside his man to score under the posts. The try was converted by Bishop.
With confidence running high, a good passing movement saw Bishop faced with little opposition and he dived over for his second try which was converted by Moursi.
However over confidence was punished when the Vandals fly half danced his way through three tackles for a splendid solo effort.
Spurred on, Maids forwards were now totally dominant with lock John Jenkins having a field day running at the opposition.
From one such run, having been awarded a penalty, Austin from 40 yards out tapped to himself and ran through to go in under the posts, again converted by Moursi.
Another converted try saw Maids 33-5 up at half time.

The restart saw the best try of the day. A Vandals' deep kick was taken by Lambden, fed out through several pairs of hands and, taking the ball at full speed, Austin ran in from 40 yards to score under the posts giving Moursi an easy conversion.
The home side then stepped up a gear with Pevic, Findley and Hollingsworth leading the charge.
With total supremacy Bishop and Austin ran in more tries to give them four each and Gareth Webb scoring the only touchdown from the forwards.
A fine display, but the team is unlikely to find life quite so rosy for the next match when they are due to travel to Saracens.
