Maids provide backbone of U17s county win

Berkshire U17s 39pts v Hampshire U17s 15pts

Sunday 8th April 2001

Berkshire entertained Hampshire in an Under 17 representative match at Maidenhead’s Braywick ground with the home club providing 14 players for the County squad.

The visitors started strongly and soon had Berks on the back foot, gaining a 3-0 lead from a penalty after 5 minutes.  Berks soon pulled all square with a fine penalty conversion from Dan Martin and shortly after they went ahead when a darting run from scrum half Gareth Edwards found space to release the backs with centre Simon Ward looping round winger Ansell and springing the covering defence to run over and touch down close to the corner with Martin adding the conversion.

The Berks pack then wound up the pressure with some fine support play from Christian Pederson and Charlie Branch who harried their opposition tirelessly, and they forced a turnover which saw the Reading duo of fullback Sean Thompson and centre Daniel Towers link up to see Thompson score.

After the break, Hants began well and scored but the Berks forwards soon reversed their fortune when they made good ground with a fine 20 meter drive, with hooker Simon Ball and prop Steve Bennett piercing the Hants defence to set up a final push for the line which saw Seb Bishop plant the ball down, and Martin convert.  Shortly after another fine forward driving move saw Cracknell score.

A fine end to end move began with Berks defending their own line and from a tap penalty Dan Martin made a scintillating run close to the half way line where he popped the ball off to prop Rainer, who passed to Tom Guest who sprinted clear of the cover defence and ran home from the half way line.

The try of the match came close to the end when Berks won a line out after a fine run from Anthony Lane. From the line out Chris Cracknell took the ball of the top and palmed ball down to Tom Guest who had run from the back of the line and took the ball at pace and powered up the blind side to score with another fine conversion from Martin to complete the scoring.

This was a notable day for match hosts Maidenhead who provided 14 players for the County and may even have had 2 more with their 2 England Schoolboy Under 18 representative players, Nils Mordt and Jon Hammond been unavailable as they were scheduled to play in the forthcoming International Festival in the Midlands.  The complete role call of Maidenhead players were: Steve Bennett, Simon Ball, Charlie Branch, Terry Rainer, Christian Pederson, Chris Cracknell, Chris Young, Adam O’Reilly, James Carne, Danial Martin, Gareth Edwards, Simon Ward ( Captain), Matt Ansell and Anthony Lane .
