U16s invade Scottish territory

London Scottish U16’s 5pts v Maidenhead U16’s 14 pts

Sunday 30th January 2000

Maidenhead travelled to London Scottish and had much the better of the territorial game & ran out easy winners although the margin at 14-5 did not reflect the possession they enjoyed.

They quickly got on top and forced The Exiles back into their own 22, and hooker Jay Bowden struck one against the head and they sent the ball down the line quickly, where Damian Bell made a surging run through the defence and was tackled 5 metres from the try line.   From the next scrum, Gareth Edwards showed very quick thinking when he picked up the fast strike and darted through the defence to touch down under the posts.   Simon Ward slotted the conversion to make it 7-0 after 5 minutes.
Maids continued to apply the pressure, however the Exiles, showed some poor discipline in defence and were frequently caught offside, however the referee did not help matters by allowing them to play on without blowing up for the majority of the offences.
Some great forward play by Tom Guest saw him frequently wrap up his tackler and then rip the ball clear in the loose and storm straight into the heart of the Scots defence  From one such forray he was well supported by Adam O'Reilly and Chris Young, who carried the ball on in close support to set up four phases of strong attacking play, however the referee continued to make some very curious decisions much to the annoyance of the Maids players .
The visitors finally added to the score when flanker Lee Page peeled off the back of the scrum and drove towards the line with Chris Cracknell by his side. As Page drew the tacklers, he palmed the ball to Cracknell who dived over for the try, with Ward converting. Maids continued to press, however they were too often prevented from attacking by the whistle.

Shortly after the break, fly half Dan Martin sold and excellent dummy and darted through the defence and drew the cover before chipping over full back and racing onto the loose ball with winger Ian Lee in close support.   They recovered the ball cleanly and from the ruck they set up Tom Guest to drive over, however another puzzling decision from the referee denied them a perfectly good score. The Scots pulled back a try when they ran onto as long clearance and Maids failed to clear their line, letting them run in on the right wing.
The visitors continued to impress and should have added a couple of more tries however when the matched finished they had to settle for the 14-5 result
