Last Sunday Maidenhead took on a very strong Redingensians side at Braywick in a crucial county league match. The visitors came to Maidenhead with a very good record behind them this year and looking for revenge having been defeated 8 – 0 by Maidenhead in the league last year. The game started very competitively and Redingensians attacked strongly but were kept out by some excellent defensive tackling from the home side. On the 10 minute marker Redingensians were awarded a penalty which their fly half slotted between the posts easily. Maidenhead continued to concede penalties and half way through the first half the visitors converted a second attempt at the posts to take the lead 6-0. From the re-start Maidenhead started to exert some authority over the set pieces and from a continuous supply of great ball they attacked the Redingensians try line relentlessly. Despite some brave defensive tackling Maidenhead eventually broke through and fly half Paul Roberts scored an excellent opportunist try, the conversion was missed so the teams went into half time with Redingensians leading 6 – 5. Following the break Maidenhead took the game by the scruff of the neck and really put the side from Reading under intense pressure in all aspects of the game. They continued to enjoy good possession from both line outs and scrums and it was not long before Maidenhead pushed a penalty down towards the oppositions try line and from the resulting line out the pack drove Luke Fletcher over the line for a fine forward try. It was not long before Maidenhead were attacking the Redingensians line once again and the visitors were forced to give away another penalty while under pressure. This time scrum half Ross Pepper took a quick tap and crashed over the line for a third try. With 1 of the tries converted and 3 point penalty converted by Roberts the home team now lead by 20 points to 6. After several changes of players on both sides the visitors made a spirited come back and after a rare visit to the Maidenhead 22 their pack put together an excellent forward drive that resulted in a try from the pack. The conversion attempt was missed and this meant that Redingensians still had to get 2 scores to get back in the game. From the re start once again the Maidenhead team re took control of the forward battle and after some tremendous inter passing between both forwards and backs wing forward Wills Page went over near the posts. This was the last score of what was an extremely well contested game that was a credit to both sets of players. It left Maidenhead coming out on top 25 points to 11 having produced an excellent performance that was applauded by all spectators watching from the touchline. |
