Maids U15s away at Henley

Sunday 24th October 2004

The game had everything – but most importantly Maidenhead played with renewed determination and toughness which was reflected in the winning score line of 37-0. It also showed that the size of a team does not matter as Henley were clearly bigger but not better!

Paul Roberts opened the score in the far corner of the field after a few minutes of the game following a successful break by Callum MacKenzie. The score was added to by a Callum try (in the same corner) following a break by Paul and a good pass by Ryan Sherwin. Unfortunately Paul missed both kicks. The scrum which performed well throughout the game (particularly in the rucks and mauls by giving the backs plenty of clean ball) showed they were equal to the task and Luke Fletcher scored after a penalty was fed to the forwards. Unfortunately no conversion. In the second half, Paul found his kicking boots from both out of hand and at the posts. A penalty conversion and a charged down kick on Henley’s try line (and try) by Paul added another 10 points by which time they game was "in the bag" for Maidenhead. Two more tries followed another by Callum after a run from the 22 and Ross Pepper after a 20 meter break by George Colburn – The rugby as a whole was enjoyable to watch even if heated at times. Tim Roger was perhaps the unluckiest person on the day with a knock on, on the try line and a disallowed try which if "referred upstairs" would not have stood.

Our sympathies and understanding to Tony who was shouted at by the referee and then rightly pointed out that refereeing is never easy and compared to this game, he does not do a bad job.

Hopefully this brings an end to the run of defeats.
