U15s fall at final hurdle

U15s at the Maidenhead Tournament

Sunday 17th October 1999

MAIDENHEAD under 15s were still missing some key players when they opened the tournament against Chinnor. This was a game Maids should not have lost and were unlucky to lose 8-5.
The first half was very even with both sides having scoring chances but unable to take them. Midway through the second half Chinnor scored to lead 5-0. With no conversions during the tournament Maids took a quick kick-off which was followed tip by William Louden who tackled the Chinnor player then picked up the ball and ran in to score a very good try.
Despite playing some good rugby, and with time running out, Chinnor won the match with a penalty kick.

Maids' second match was an entertaining affair against Cleve, which Maids won 15-10.
Maids' forwards won some good ball and James MacDonald kicked well to keep Cleve in their own 22.
Maids opened the scoring when the forwards won good ball in their 22, the ball was moved from MacDonald to Dan Evans who then timed his pass well for Sam Hocking to score.
With Richard Barber and Kevin Yearley making good forward runs, the Maids' second try soon came, Gareth Turner scoring in the corner. Cleve scored just before half-time to make the -final score 10-5.
Early in the second half with Barber and Louden winning good ball for the backs Maids looked like scoring after a good break in the centre by Brady, but the ball was lost in the tackle and Cleve ran 60 metres up field only to be stopped near the line by a great tackle by Barber.
Both Brady and Barber were injured as a result of these tackles and took no further part. Cleve then scored to make it 10-10.
But Maids were determined to win and forced play down field with Jordan Levett and Stuart Smithies putting pressure on the Cleve halfbacks. The ball went loose and MacDonald picked up and scored the winner in the corner.

Soon after this came the final against Blackheath and with injuries and tiredness, Maids were no match for them and lost 40-0.

Blackheath were therefore unbeaten and worthy winners.
