Poor decision-making costs colts league win

Redingensians U15s 15 v Maidenhead U15s 10

Sunday 14th November 1999

MAIDENHEAD under 15s lost their first league match of the season 15-10 at Redingensians on Sunday, and will know it is a game they should have won after taking the wrong option with a number of try-scoring opportunities.

Apart from missing too many chances Maids also gave away too many penalties and were often forced back by a penalty having made good ground.
Maids' backs looked in good form with Alex Greer, Alexander Kent and Sam Hocking showing up well, while the large but mobile Redingensian pack restricted Maids of possession despite strong runs from Stuart Smithies, Richard Barber and William Lowderi.
Reds scored first when Maids conceded a penalty under the posts, and this was followed soon afterwards by a strong forward drive, which gave Reds a 10-0 lead.
Maids always looked dangerous when getting good ball and Greer and Kent both came close to scoring, although at this point Maids did lose Dan Evans with a neck injury and he was replaced by Owen Lewis.
Maids continued to press hard and were rewarded with a try when James Appleton charged down a kick and Barber followed up to touch down in the corner and make it 10-5. Maids then relaxed and allowed the Reds' No.8 to run through some weak tackling to score near the posts and make the score 15-5 at half-time.

Early in the second-half further injuries to Mattie Filmore and Lowden saw Jordan Levett and Alex Raskauskus come on, while the second half again saw Maids wasting good scoring chances.
A determined Reds defence kept Maids out until the final seconds when some good passing from James McDonald and Daryl Brady set Greer free to score in the corner and make the final score 15-10.
