| Maidenhead U15s travelled to
Bromley with a squad of 24 players on Sunday to play a
side who were unbeaten this season, and it showed as the
visitors when down 34-15 in a good game. It was Maids first game since December 5 and
they were unable t settle into a team game due to a
number of injuries with six key players having already
gone off the pitch by the 20th minute.
Maids played down hill in the first half, but due to the
disruptions soon found themselves 10-0 down after 10
minutes, although the forwards started to gradually get
themselves back into the game.
However Maids went further behind when the Bromley backs
ran through some weak tackling to score under the posts,
and with the conversion made the score 17-0 to give them
a solid foundation.
Maids finally got on the scoresheet when Eddie
Hopkin-Jones scored a fine individual try on the stroke
of half-time after making a good tackle on the Bromley10
metre line, he picked up the loose ball and raced in from
40 metres.
In the second-half Maids, now
playing up hill, put on the remainder of the squad and
again Bromley scored early on to make the score 22-5 with
it looking very ominous for the visitors.
The Maids' half-backs were finding things difficult, but
from inside their own half nearly scored when Alexander
Kent and Dan Evans chased a kick ahead and were only just
tackled short of the tryline for what would have been a
deserved touchdown.
Although the visitors were applying more pressure, the
Maids' backs spilled the ball in a tackle and Bromley ran
in a try, followed quickly by another to make the score
an imposing 34-5.
With 15 minutes to go Maids looked like being on the end
of a heavy defeat but the Bromley players started to be
penalised, and Maids began to win some good ball.
This resulted in the backs moving the ball quickly with
James Appleton in the centre finding Alex Rakauskus on
the wing, and he scored with aplomb in the corner.
This gave the visitors more confidence to move the ball.
Maids finished strongly and after a strong run from
William Lowden the ball was moved to the backs and Evans
made a break in the corner for Appleton to dive in for
the try and make the final score 34-15.
