A large squad from Sutton and Epsom RFC travelled to Braywick on 25th September. In this early season friendly a chance was taken to rotate the squads during four quarters and try players in new positions. From the start Maidenhead took control. The ball was moved quickly out of the scrum by Wright to Boyd who sent O’Byrne on a powerful run through the Sutton and Epsom defence. Heley converted to open the score. Sutton and Epsom were quick to respond and soon had Maidenhead on the bac foot. Naish was quick to spot an opportunity for a fast break and took play back to into their half. From another scrum Maidenhead worked a set piece which saw Manny Saundh take the ball over the line to increase their lead. Heley placed an accurate kick between the posts to take the score to 14-0. From the restart Maidenhead were soon back on the attack. Boyd held the ball cleanly from the kick off and made ground into Sutton and Epsom’s half. Maids worked the ball out of the ruck and following some swift, accurate passing, Townsend made his way across the line for an unconverted try. In the second quarter Sutton substituted some of their larger players which changed the complexion of the game. The first period of the quarter was dominated by Sutton who put 2 tries past Maids. However the team rallied and it was not until the end of the second quarter that Sutton scored again to level the score at 19 apiece. The third quarter saw both sides come out with a point to make. Sutton edged ahead but Maidenhead fought back when O’Connor looped around the back of the scrum to release Cadden who sent Naish over for Maids fourth try of the game. Maidenhead went into the last quarter of the game leading 26-24 but Sutton’s larger squad soon had them reeling. Having fresh substitutes allowed them to put 4 tries past a tiring Maidenhead side despite some heroic efforts in defence. Sutton were the eventual winners with a final score of 26-50. |
