Physical approach
provides stiff test
Sunday 19th September 1999
| There was a stern early season
test for Maids on Sunday against the physical home side
in a match played over three 20 minute periods. The visitors started brightly and were quicker to the loose ball, but some rustiness was evident in Maids' ball retention and Park's heavier forwards started to take charge at the set plays, particularly in the scrums. Despite determined tackling Maids' line was eventually breached when Park battered their way over for a converted try. Maids came back with a break from Mark O'Haire which saw the big centre make 50 yards before he was stopped. At the start of the second period Maids broke from their own line and carried play the length of the field when Hughes and Riordan were forced into touch. From the resultant scrum Hughes forced his way over for a try. However a further Park try left the score at 14-5 to the home side at the end of the period. The final session saw Maids playing into strong wind and Park twice went over for tries, one of which was converted. However at the changeover Maids took advantage of the wind and playing with fresh legs and new heart went over for two fine tries by Evans and Matt Dhillon, the first converted by Harris. |
