U14s frustrated against Newbury Maidenhead U14s 0 v Newbury U14s 0 |

It was a frustrating start to Maidenhead U14s' Berkshire league campaign against old rivals Newbury at Braywick on Sunday – the two sides cancelling each other out to end in that rugby rarity, a 0-0 draw. It was obvious that both sides had not seen much action since before the Christmas break with a plethora of handling and technical errors cancelling out the more creative moments. While this may sound a dull spectacle it was anything but, with both sides full blooded in their efforts to turn the game, but in truth neither side was good enough in attack to break through committed defences. Newbury had their chances with several break outs from Maidenhead handling errors and should possibly have had a try in the second but for sterling defence holding up the ball carrier over the line. This move, like so many others, started from Maidenhead missing their passes while attacking at the other end. For their part, Maidenhead were most effective while driving up through the forwards and could have won at the death. But knock ons and collisions with our own players denied us the finishing blow. On the bright side a draw is an improvement over last year when Maids lost to Newbury 12-10. It was also encouraging to see such commitment from the whole squad. And at last we have a back line that looks dangerous in attack and solid in defence, where Jamie McLean was outstanding. When we start to join up the bits of our play and iron out the little mistakes Maids U14s will indeed be a force to be reckoned with.
