U14s hard fought match at Redingensians

Redingensions U14’s 10pts v Maidenhead U14’s 5pts

Sunday 14th November 1999

Maidenhead played their first league match of the season against their rivals Redingensians and right from the start the match showed signs of being a hard fought game.

Maidenhead kicked off and capitalised on Redingensians’ mistakes but were unable to break through their defence. Redingensians fought back and almost scored but a scrum 5 and a penalty allowed Maids to gain the upper hand.

Winning a scrum allowed Greg Edwards to go blind and gain ground before being tackled into touch. Maidenhead won the lineout with the ball passed out to James O’Reilly who took it on with Greg taking it further into Redingensians’ 22m area. Following a line-out the ball eventually came out to Scott Harris who side stepped two players to gain an overlap before passing out along the line to Andrew McEwan who scored in the corner.

Redingensians fought back taking the ball forward and nearly scoring. They then won a penalty but failed to convert it, though a subsequent lineout was won by Redingensians resulting in a try. Maidenhead kicked off and immediately took the ball to Redingensians’ touch line but did not score with the first half ending all square at 5pts.

Redingensians kicked off the second half, which saw some close forward work with Liam Henwood and Doug Barrow trying to break free.

Maidenhead did eventually get clean possession allowing Mark O’Haire to break for the line only to be tackled into touch. A clearing kick by Scott Harris and a curtailed break down the line by James O’Reilly were the only interludes in a rather scrappy spell where both packs were tiring.

Redingensians then put on a final surge winning a scrum and scoring to take the lead with an unconverted try. Maidenhead fought back getting into Redingensians 22m area but were unable to score before the final whistle.
