Maidenhead missed an outstanding chance to claim the Berkshire League title last season because they made an complete hash of their match against Redingensians, who went on to take the title. There were no mistakes this time, as Maids maintained their 100% record for the season with a crushing victory over Redingensians by 26-5 on the first XV pitch at Braywick on Sunday.

It was a performance that one Maidenhead coach described as "almost brilliant." Maids dominated in every aspect of forward play, back play and territory but so often, the final pass went just astray or was knocked down. Redingensians also performed heroics in last-ditch defence. Otherwise, the score could have assumed enormous proportions.

It was an excellent match to watch, controlled expertly by RFU referee Dave Grashoff. After some recent incidents of excess involving opposing coaches and parents, Maids were also delighted with the sporting attitude of the Redingensians team and the rest of their followers.

None of the Maidenhead squad was below par, though special mention should be made of a stream of two-handed catches by Joe Thomas, Chris Parrot and Luke Knowles at the line-out; of the expert generalship of Tom Lewis and Chris Adam, who opted to speed the ball out to a back division that was deadly dangerous and in which Dave Hodgson and Ryan Christian ran rampant. Pat McSweeney showed a return to top form with his power in the front five. However, in truth there were grounds for singling out every Maids player.

Maidenhead had already created at least six golden chances before they finally opened the scoring - sharp handling sent Alex Cannon away down the left for the try; shortly after that, a succession of battering runs and quick recycling, involving at least five home players, saw Chris Adam swoop for the try. Hodgson converted and for 10-0 half time lead.

Tom Kay won the reward for ceaseless foraging with a try in the second half from a defensive error. Redingensians  then won due reward for their persistence with a try from excellent support play and inter passing, before Maidenhead sealed the satisfying victory when Thomas moved to No 8 at a scrum and drove over. Hodgson kicked both second half conversions. Anxious to keep their full squad together, Maids will give game time to all their players in this weekend's game at Saracens .
