U14s curtain raiser at Henley

Henly U14’s 38pts v Maidenhead U14’s 22pts

Sunday 9th April 2000

Maidenhead Under 14's travelled away to play as a curtain raiser to the league match between West Hartlepool and Henley RFC.

Maids showed good form early in the match dragging Henley from side to side while Scott Harris, Mark O'Haire and Dale Taylor displayed a full repertoire of handling skills, looping and throwing long miss-passes enabling winger Michael Etherington to show a good turn of speed to come very close to scoring twice in the corner. However the one bad pass was seized upon by the eager Henley backs breaking out from their own half to score a converted try.
Once again Maidenhead rallied well, Alex Hughes and Mark Devine were halted close in before captain Greg Edwards sold the whole Henley backs an outrageous dummy and crashed over to bring the score back to 7 - 5. Henley took the score to 19 - 5 when their centres, looking suspiciously offside for much of the afternoon, intercepted a pass and scored under the posts. Henley camped on Maids try line for what seemed an eternity, Greg Edwards at last eased the pressure breaking out from his own try line, dummying, handing-off, breaking tackles, and getting all the way to the Henley 10 metre line before he was finally pulled down despite good support from Dan Riordan and Ross Evans. As half time approached O'Haire was taken off injured and Andrew McEwen took his place putting in some great tackles on the Henley players, while one tackle by Dale Taylor had the watching faithful jumping up and down on the touchline to applaud his technique.

Maidenhead changed a number of players at half-time and this coupled with the loss of O'Haire probably allowed Henley to pull away to 31 - 5. Maids continued to ring the changes, Doug Barrow and Mark Devine went on their characteristic surges, supported by the excellent Evan Eburne and Liam Henwood and it was from a drive from Philip White that Doug Barrow blasted Maids back into the match. A quick tap and go by Greg Edwards when the Henley fly half was at last penalised for what was persistent offside, close support from Ross Evans and Toby Sears, enabled Alex Hughes to pull back the deficit further to 31 - 17.
As Maidenhead went in search of further scores, Henley broke out and despite good efforts to catch the winger from Jay Marshall and Dale Taylor, Henley once again increased the margin to 38 - 17. Despite this setback Maids continued to pressure the Henley line and when first Sean O'Neill then Daniel May failed to score, a pick-up and drive from Edward Petch resulted in the excellent Devine scoring in the corner to give a final score of Henley 38 - Maidenhead 22.
