Salisbury U14’s 5pts v Maidenhead U14’s 56pts

Sunday 9th January 2000

Maidenhead under 14s started the New Year with a convincing 56-5 win against Salisbury.

Maidenhead kicked off with the slope and sun in their advantage so that Liam Henwood was up on the ball before Salisbury could open it out. The ball was passed to the centre and then back to the touchline with Mark O'Hare scoring.
The second try quickly followed with Doug Barrow catching the ball and gaining ground before forming a ruck and passing the ball out to Mike Etheridge who scored an unconverted try.
Following the restart Salisbury gained some ground but Mike Etheridge collected a loose ball passed out to Byron Chadwick who gained some ground. There followed several small gains in ground before the ball came out to Greg Edwards who made his usual dash for the line and scored. This time Scott Harris produced a good kick to bring the score to 17-0.
Following several substitutions by Maidenhead, Salisbury restarted and despite winning a scrum and kicking up to Maidenhead’s line, the Maids defended well eventually gaining possession and passing the ball out to Andrew McEwan. He was eventually stopped with Salisbury gaining possession only to lose it and allow Mark O'Hare to kick on and touch down in the corner only just missing the conversion.
Salisbury fought back and despite gaining ground were unable to press home their attack with a penalty awarded to Maidenhead. Having regained the initiative Maids won a ruck with the ball passed out to Harris who kicked on and scored.
Salisbury were soon back on the attack gaining a penalty close to the Maids line but a - s the ball was passed out along their line Seth Munn intercepted it and ran three-quarters of the pitch to score close to the posts. This allowed Harris to convert it and take the halftime score to 34-0.

Salisbury started the second half with a kick into the corner but Maidenhead defended, well regaining ground before McEwan was tackled into touch. Maidenhead steadily gained ground with runs by Harris, Hughes and O'Hare until a penalty to Maids gave McEwan the chance to run up the line and score with another conversion by Harris.
Two more tries by Maidenhead, the second created by Daniel Riordan passing inside to Mike Etherington took the score to over 50. Salisbury did not give up and in fact scored following a relaxation on Maidenhead’s part. Maidenhead restarted with Alex Hughes and Byron Chadwick gaining ground and Riordan kicking into touch in Salisbury's 22 but Salisbury won the lineout taking the game down field before good tackling by McEwan stopped their advance.
A penalty to Maidenhead was given with the ball passed out to McEwan who ran half the pitch to score the final try of a good team effort.
