| Maidenhead under 14s started the
New Year with a convincing 56-5 win against Salisbury. Maidenhead kicked off with the slope and sun
in their advantage so that Liam Henwood was up on the
ball before Salisbury could open it out. The ball was
passed to the centre and then back to the touchline with
Mark O'Hare scoring.
The second try quickly followed with Doug Barrow catching
the ball and gaining ground before forming a ruck and
passing the ball out to Mike Etheridge who scored an
unconverted try.
Following the restart Salisbury gained some ground but
Mike Etheridge collected a loose ball passed out to Byron
Chadwick who gained some ground. There followed several
small gains in ground before the ball came out to Greg
Edwards who made his usual dash for the line and scored.
This time Scott Harris produced a good kick to bring the
score to 17-0.
Following several substitutions by Maidenhead, Salisbury
restarted and despite winning a scrum and kicking up to
Maidenheads line, the Maids defended well
eventually gaining possession and passing the ball out to
Andrew McEwan. He was eventually stopped with Salisbury
gaining possession only to lose it and allow Mark O'Hare
to kick on and touch down in the corner only just missing
the conversion.
Salisbury fought back and despite gaining ground were
unable to press home their attack with a penalty awarded
to Maidenhead. Having regained the initiative Maids won a
ruck with the ball passed out to Harris who kicked on and
scored.
Salisbury were soon back on the attack gaining a penalty
close to the Maids line but a - s the ball was passed out
along their line Seth Munn intercepted it and ran
three-quarters of the pitch to score close to the posts.
This allowed Harris to convert it and take the halftime
score to 34-0.
Salisbury started the second half
with a kick into the corner but Maidenhead defended, well
regaining ground before McEwan was tackled into touch.
Maidenhead steadily gained ground with runs by Harris,
Hughes and O'Hare until a penalty to Maids gave McEwan
the chance to run up the line and score with another
conversion by Harris.
Two more tries by Maidenhead, the second created by
Daniel Riordan passing inside to Mike Etherington took
the score to over 50. Salisbury did not give up and in
fact scored following a relaxation on Maidenheads
part. Maidenhead restarted with Alex Hughes and Byron
Chadwick gaining ground and Riordan kicking into touch in
Salisbury's 22 but Salisbury won the lineout taking the
game down field before good tackling by McEwan stopped
their advance.
A penalty to Maidenhead was given with the ball passed
out to McEwan who ran half the pitch to score the final
try of a good team effort.
